Reading

Miss Walker's and Miss Howes' Groups: This week we have been reading 'Nelly the Monster-Sitter'. Today you are going to write a book review! Follow the link and use the template as a guide for your own book review.

Miss Rowland's Group: Log on to Oxford Reading Owl (find the login details in your home learning book).  Find the story ‘Things that Sting’. Read the book and read through the key words found on the ‘index’ page at the back. Do you know what all of these words mean? Make a poster with the title ‘Beware of things that sting’ and draw all of the stinging things with labels. 

Miss Upton's, Mrs Hussain's and Miss Potter's Groups: Today we would like you to read a section of a brand new story called 'A Fox Called Herbert'. Try to read it on your own but if you are finding it too tricky, ask your grown up to help you. Remember to sound out any unknown words. When you have read it, we would like you to email us to tell us how many stars you would give it (out of 5), whether you enjoyed it and why you liked it or didn't like it.

Miss Rowland's Group and Miss Higgins' Groups: Today we are going to continue working out missing numbers as part of a scale just like yesterday but today we are not using thermometers. We are going to find missing numbers as part of a number line. Can you remember what the scale might go up or down in? Is it going up/down in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s? Today there will be a few more missing numbers compared to yesterday making it a little more tricky. Follow the link, have a go and try your best!

When you have finished, log on to Espresso and follow: ‘Key Stage 1’, ‘Maths’, ‘Number and Place Value’, ‘Reading, writing and representing numbers’, ‘Activities’ and finally ‘Number line 0-50’ or ‘Number line 0-100’.

Miss Rowland's and Miss Higgins' Groups: We are going to look at thermometers today. Can you remember what we use a thermometer for? And what we measure it in? Go and tell an adult in your house and see if you are right. If you are not sure, ask them!

Miss Walker's and Miss Howes' Groups: Log on to Oxford Owl and find the book 'Nelly the Monster-Sitter' and go to Chapter 5. Predict how you think this story is going to end. 

Now finish the story by reading Chapter 5.

In your home learning book, complete these questions:

  1. How did Nelly let people know she was a monster-sitter?
  2. What are the thwuckery, suckery twins called?
  3. Where did the monster parents go while Nelly was monster-sitting?
  4. On page 35, Rowan's parents turned slowly and wearily. Can you think of any other words that mean the same as wearily?

Miss Rowland's Group: Log on to Oxford Reading Owl and find the story ‘Rumpelstiltskin’. Complete the ‘Talk Together’ section with an adult before you read the story. Now read it and retell the story to your grown up afterwards using the picture cues on the back page.

Challenge: complete ‘Play Activity 1 and 2’ as well.

Miss Upton's, Mrs Hussain's and Miss Potter's Groups: Today we would like you to have a go at a reading challenge with your grown up. Have a go at reading an extract from 'It's a Great Big Colourful World' by Tom Schamp. If it is too tricky for you to read on your own, ask an adult to read it to you. Once you have read the pages, become a reading detective and answer the questions.

Make sure you click on ‘cursive’. Choose 4 letters today. Watch the formation videos carefully. Now it is your turn to write 2 lines of each letter neatly in your home learning book. Once you have done this, how many words can you think of starting with your letters for today? Try and write 10 words starting with each of your letters.

Miss Rowland's Group: Today, continuing on with the theme of Number, we are going to look at 'greater than' and 'less than'. Can you remember the symbols? Draw what they look like and explain the symbol to an adult in your house.

We have built up a good understanding of using the greater than, less than and equal to symbols in our lessons so today we are going to take it a step further. Follow the link and have a look at the worksheet.

Remember to:

  • Work out the number sentences on each side.
  • Have a think about your answers - which symbol needs to go in the middle? 
  • Add in the correct symbol.

Challenge: Log in to Espresso and follow: Key Stage 1 - Maths - Number and Place Value - Ordering and Comparing - Activities - Greater than, Less than (crocodile) or Greater than, Less than (symbols).

 

Miss Higgins' Group: Log on to Espresso using your logins in your home learning books. Click on 'KS1' then 'Maths' and 'Times Tables Tester.' Once on this click on 'activities' and choose a challenge as a warm up. Can you complete all the multiplication problems?

Then you need to stay on Espresso on the maths page and now click on 'Fractions' and 'Activities'. Complete the 

'Sets of objects: halves, thirds or quarters?' activity.

 

Miss Howes' Group: Today we are going to continue our learning about measuring weight. Click on this link, then choose 'Week 1' and have a look at Lesson 5. Now complete the pink activity. 

Challenge: With your grown up, explore capacity of water using different objects in your home. How many bottles of water does it take to fill your sink? How many cups of juice come out of a bottle? Can you compare the amount of water in two cups - which has more capacity? Which has the least capacity?

 

Topic

Today in topic we are going to do some Design Technology. Over the next few weeks, we are going to be designing our own moving vehicle. Watch this YouTube video and think about all the different types of vehicles.

Have a look out of your window and make a list of all the vehicles that you can see. What other vehicles can you think of?

Follow this link and watch the clip. In the film, we do not see an alien but imagine Tony could meet one! Describe what the alien would look like. Draw a picture of it with Tony. Write the conversation between Tony, the alien and Grandpa. What would they all say to each other? How would they feel?

Writing

Follow this link and watch the clip. In the film, we do not see an alien but imagine Tony could meet one! Describe what the alien would look like. Draw a picture of it with Tony. Write the conversation between Tony, the alien and Grandpa. What would they all say to each other? How would they feel?

Don’t forget that the units number doesn’t change, it’s the tens only that changes! Follow the link and complete this worksheet. Click on ‘Oakley and Brody Easter’. Watch the clip to find out how Brody and Oakley celebrate Easter in their house.   • Does it make you think of anything else you have read recently?

Now read Chapters 1 and 2 and answer these questions in your home learning book:

  • What number house does the first monster family live at?
  • Why was Nelly not scared of the monsters?
  • What was Freeb doing on the carpet?
  • Why do you think Chapter 3 is going to be called 'Lump, Blotch and Bog'?
