Welcome to Reception.

 If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to ask any member of the Reception team.

In Reception, we offer a broad and balanced curriculum to prepare our children for a life in modern Britain.

Reception Curriculum Map 2021/22

Water Wonders

Last week, our topic was 'Water Wonders'. We learnt about different creatures that live in water such as frogs and fish that we can keep as pets. We also learnt about bigger creatures that live in the sea, including wales, dolphins, sea horses, sharks and stingrays. We learnt some amazing facts, that an octopus has 3 hearts and blue blood! We read lots of books about sea creatures, wrote sentences from the story 'Rainbow Fish' and created beautiful artwork using a variety of materials.

Fur and Feathers 

Over the last two weeks, our theme has been 'Fur and Feathers'.
Last week, we learnt all about pets. The children sent in some pictures of their pets to show their friends. We did lots of creative activities and wrote a great sentence about our pets or a pet we would like to have! 
This week, we have been learning all about wild animals. We made some binoculars and went on a safari ride! We saw lots of wild animals like, zebra's, elephants and tigers - it was so much fun!

Patterns in Maths

In maths we have been creating patterns using colours, shapes, actions and sounds.

Country Farms

This week we have been learning about the farm. We have been learning about animals and their young; jobs that are done on the farm and produce that comes from the farm such as eggs, milk and vegetables. 


This week our topic has been 'Easter'. We read the Easter Story and looked at different videos to help us understand what happened. We have had lots of discussions about how and why we celebrate Easter! We wrote a sentence about Easter, created Easter cards for our families and made our own Easter baskets. We have had so much fun!


 Today, we learnt to do chest compressions to the song 'Baby Shark'!

Brilliant Bugs 

Last week, our topic was 'Brilliant Bugs'. Reception went on a bug hunt around the school grounds and into the science garden and found lots of insects and minibeasts. We watched lots of videos and discussed what they looked like and how they moved. We created lots of art pictures using a variety of materials and explored minibeasts during discovery time. 

International Women's Day 2022

To celebrate International Women's Day this year, Reception did lots of activities about Emmeline Pankhurst. Have a look at what we got up to below! 

Science Week 2022 - Ready, Steady, Grow!

We have been drawing and labelling the different parts of a plant and we even went into the Reception garden and planted our own Sunflower seeds that we will take home at Easter to look after. We looked at and talked about what a seed needs in order to help it grow (soil, water, sunlight) and have been watering our seeds every day! We can't wait to find out the winner of our competition - which child's flower has grown the tallest?

Power Maths

In Power Maths, we were learning all about positional and directional language. We used beebots to practise this language throughout the week by giving Barry the beebot instructions to move in different directions

Swing Into Spring!

Reception went on a Spring walk around the school grounds including the science garden. We were learning all about signs of Spring such as flowers starting to grow, warmer weather and longer days. We created beautiful spring pictures using a variety of creative materials such as paint and playdough. We read lots of spring stories that the children loved!

World Book Day 2022


To celebrate 'World Book Day' we decided to spend the whole week celebrating our love of books! We learnt all about the author Julia Donaldson and we enjoyed many of her stories. We enjoyed acting out the stories with story sacks and puppets that we made. On Thursday we dressed up as our favourite book characters!

Chinese New Year

This week we celebrated Chinese New Year. We talked about how people celebrate and we listened to the story about the Chinese zodiac calendar. We tasted some Chinese food and made Chinese lanterns and dragons.
Eco Warriors
This week we have been learning about recycling. We have talked about the importance of looking after our planet and how we can all play our part in keeping our environment clean and safe.

People Who Help Us

This week, our topic has been 'People who help us'. We have been learning all about occupations of people who help us:
Police officers
Lollipop people
Doctors and Nurses
Dentists etc.
We did lots of creative activities during discovery time and even got to dress up as a lollipop person to help our friends cross the road safely!

Safe and Sound

This week, our Topic has been 'Safe and Sound'. We have been learning all about how to keep ourselves safe at school and at home!
We have done lots of work on 'The Gingerbread Man' and learnt how to be safe whilst baking.
On the Move
This week in Reception, our Topic has been 'On the Move'. We have been learning all about different types of vehicles/transport and how they move,  what they look like etc. We have done lots of activities including:
- Worked at the 'car wash' in the water tray
- Collaged and painted vehicles
- Investigated car tracks from different vehicles using paint
- Read lots of stories about transport
- Did a traffic survey and wrote about the different vehicles we could see

Diwali 2021 

To celebrate Diwali, this year Reception watched some videos and discussed with our partners all the different ways that Diwali can be celebrated and what it is about. We then created our own Rangoli patterns by colouring and dot painting.

Marcus Rashford Day

To celebrate the end of Black History Month, we looked at why some people find Marcus Rashford inspirational. We did lots of different activities throughout the day but our favourites were the penalty shootout, designing and building our own football stadiums and designing our own football kits. 


For our topic 'Autumn', the children did lots of lovely activities. We went on an Autumn Walk and then:
- Did some writing on what we saw on our walk.
- Finger painted autumn trees
- Leaf printing squirrel tails
- Investigated Autumn objects using magnifying glasses

Head to Toe

 In our topic 'Head to Toe', we learnt all about our 5 senses. The children enjoyed making musical instruments when it was 'Hearing Day'.
