Throughout the week, the children complete 4 independent challenges in both writing and maths. This is an opportunity for them to develop and apply new skills.
Take a look at some of the fantastic independent work Year 1 have completed!
This half term in PSHE we are looking at 'Healthy Me' and why it is important to stay healthy. We discussed all the ways we can look after ourselves and talked about the importance of washing our hands to get rid of all the germs that are on them.
We then did an experiment using water, pepper and soap. The pepper was acting as the germs and we wanted to find out what happens to the germs when we use soap to wash our hands.
We found out that when we dipped our finger into the water with no soap, all the germs stuck to our finger. However, when we did it again, this time with soap on our finger, none of the germs got on our fingers because the soap dispersed them all!
In Geography this half term, we are looking at the UK and our local area. We looked at a map of the area around school and discussed what we could see on the map. We learnt that maps have symbols instead of pictures or words so we can see what is in the area easily.
We then looked at the map of our local area again and looked for all the symbols on the map and worked as a team to guess what they mean.
We then used the map to plot our routes from our homes to school before planning a route from school to Boggart Hole Clough.
Welcome Back Week
To welcome the children back into school, we did lots of activities focusing on working as a team and promoting positive mental health.
For one activity, we thought about what makes a good friend and how we could be good friends before making our own friendship paper dolls.
We also read the story 'The World Made a Rainbow!' and worked together to create our own rainbow. Each table had a different colour of the rainbow which the children painted before adding different items of that colour. It looks amazing!
Then we did lots of independent challenges and got very creative.
Take a look out our amazing 'welcome back' work below!
Everybody in Year 1 would like to wish you all a very 'Merry Christmas' and we hope you have a safe and wonderful Christmas break.
At the start of term, an alien wrote Year 1 a letter asking us to help him to build a stronger spaceship. We investigated materials to see what the strongest and most waterproof material is and then designed and made our own spaceships.
We thought about the best way to join and decorate our spaceships and we are so pleased with the results!
This year Year 1 looked at Diwali and how it is celebrated. We learnt all about Rangoli patterns and even had a go at drawing and creating our own Rangoli patterns.
As part of our Autumn 2 topic, 'Moon Zoom', we looked at constellations and stars. We learnt that constellations are a group of stars and used our knowledge to create our own. We looked carefully at pictures of different constellations before sketching them and using glitter, sequins and string to create them.
Look at our fabulous artwork below.
This is Me!
This half term, we have been learning to sign along to 'This is Me' from 'The Greatest Showman'. We have loved learning a new skill and it is one of our favourite songs.
Check out our performance!
This half term we have been looking at healthy foods and a balanced diet. We focused on hygiene and talked about how to be safe in the kitchen. The children made their own healthy pizzas using a range of healthy ingredients and learnt new skills such as chopping. Take a look at our delicious healthy pizzas below.
Black History Month 2020
This October, we celebrated Black History Month. In Year 1, we looked at Mae Jemison and why she was important. We looked at a picture of her to see if we could work out why she is famous and we thought about questions we would like to ask her.
We really enjoyed learning about all of Mae's achievements!
In History this half term, we are looking at our local area and how our school has changed. We looked at pictures that had been sent to us showing us Moston Lane Primary School in the 1940s. We spotted areas of school that we recognised and talked about how schools might have changed. We sorted some pictures into 'then' and 'now' and discussed how schools were different in the past.
World Book Day 2020
We loved dressing up as our favourite book characters for World Book Day. Look at our fantastic costumes below!
