At Moston Lane Primary School, we are proud to have an enthusiastic Eco Committee that plays a vital role in making our school more environmentally friendly. Each September, new members are elected to represent their classes. These representatives meet regularly to share ideas, plan projects and lead initiatives that support sustainability throughout the school.

What We Do

The Eco Committee meets at least once every half term. Together, they review everyday activities around school and suggest ways we can all help protect our environment. Their work is part of the Eco-Schools programme, a nationwide initiative that empowers pupils to lead positive environmental change.

Each year begins with an Environmental Review, helping the committee identify the most important issues to focus on. This year, our chosen topics are:

  • Waste

  • Energy

  • Marine

Using their findings, the committee created our school’s Environmental Action Plan. Throughout the year, they monitor progress, evaluate the impact of their actions and update the plan to ensure we keep moving forward.

Our Eco Committee is passionate about making a difference and inspiring everyone at Moston Lane to do the same!

Growing Our Own Food

As part of our commitment to sustainability, the Eco Committee has been busy growing fruit and vegetables. We have grown lettuces, carrots, strawberries and leeks.

This hands on project helps children learn where food comes from, understand the importance of healthy eating and see how growing your own food can reduce food miles and packaging waste.

No Mow Zone

At Moston Lane Primary, we’ve created a No Mow Zone on our school grounds to support local wildlife and take action against climate change. These areas are left to grow naturally, allowing wildflowers and grasses to flourish and creating a safe space for bees, butterflies, and other important pollinators.

By reducing how often we cut the grass in these zones, we’re:

  • Encouraging more biodiversity

  • Providing food and shelter for insects and small animals

  • Helping reduce our school’s carbon footprint

The Eco Committee helps monitor these areas, learning about the different plants and creatures that make their home in our growing wild spaces. Pupils have made signs to explain the zones and remind others why it’s important to let nature grow.

Keeping Our Environment Tidy

Our Eco Committee is passionate about keeping Moston Lane Primary, and our local community, clean and litter-free. As part of our ongoing work to care for the environment, pupils regularly take part in litter picking sessions around the school grounds and nearby areas.

Equipped with gloves and litter pickers our young Eco Leaders take responsibility for looking after shared spaces. They know that even a small piece of litter can harm wildlife or travel through drains into rivers and oceans.

Litter picks are not only a great way to protect the planet but also help children build a sense of pride and ownership in their environment.
