 Writing

This week we are working on writing our own non-chronological report based on a sea creature of your choice after reading ‘The Seaside Switch’ by Kathleen Kudlinski. On Tuesday you were asked to do lots of research about your sea creature. Today you are going to make sure you have enough information for each of the sections of our report but also to start thinking about creating some amazing sentences, ready to write the report tomorrow!

Miss Rowland has created a table of her information so she can clearly see each section for her animal. Follow the link to have a look!

Your job is to do what Miss Rowland has done, but with your information about your sea creature. Make sure they are in the correct sections (Appearance, Habitat and Diet) and have a go at doing some super star sentences (like Miss Rowland did in green) in your own table - follow the link for your template. If you cannot print the table, ask a grown up to help you recreate it in your home learning book.

Reading

Miss Walker's and Miss Howes' Groups: Follow the link and scroll down to page 2 for today's activity. Read the text 'The Tiger Who Came To Tea' and answer the comprehension questions in your home learning book. Remember to go back and use the text to help you!

Miss Rowland's Group: Today you are going to focus on the traditional tale of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. Your first task today is to find someone in your house to have a discussion about these questions with:

  • Have you read this traditional tale before?
  • What happens?
  • Can you name any other traditional tales you know and have read?

Once you have finished your discussion, find a cosy place in your house to sit, listen, read and watch the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Once you have finished, your final job for today is to answer the questions about what you have listened to. There are some fill in the gap type questions as well as a drawing task and a writing task to finish. Don’t forget to go back to the link and listen to different sections of the story again if you need to, to help you answer the questions. Enjoy!

Writing

Today is your final day on your sea creature non-chronological report writing. Throughout the week, you have researched the sea creature of your choice and yesterday and you put all your facts and information into the correct sections. You may also have had a go at creating some superstar sentences too!

Today is the day you are going to write your non-chronological report!

Here is a layout for you to follow to transfer all your information into a non-chronological report. Again, you maybe able to print the layout and write in the boxes or you may need some help from a grown up to make a layout in your home learning book.

Both Miss Rowland and Miss Howes are very excited to read lots of information about sea creatures from your reports. We can’t wait to see what you have done. Don’t forget to take a picture of your report and send it to Y2@mostonlane.manchester.sch.uk!

  4. How do you think the troll felt when Little Billy Goat crossed his bridge?

Staying Healthy

Today we would like you to choose your own way to keep healthy. This could be with Joe Wicks, yoga or a meditation with Jamie, a GoNoodle dance or you could even just have a good dance to your favourite song!

Reading

Miss Walker's and Miss Howes' Groups: Log in to Oxford Owl and find yesterday’s story ‘Green Island’. Remind yourself of what had happened in the story so far and explain it to a grown up.

Now turn to page 14 and read the story to the end.

Now write a book review for Green Island using this template to help!

Miss Rowland's Group: Today you are going to read a text all about something that is found by two people in the park. Have you ever been to the park and found something exciting? Without looking at what the text is about today, have a guess what you think the strange yet wonderful thing is that they find in the park!

Now follow the link to open the text and find someone in your house to read the text with. Take it in turns to read a paragraph each. Once you have finished, discuss what you thought of the story with the person you are reading with.

Did you enjoy it? Why/ why not? What do you think will happen next?

Now answer the questions in your home learning book.

Miss Potter's and Miss Upton's Groups: Click on the picture to follow the link and read the short extract of 'Not Now Bernard' and answer the questions below.

Not Now, Bernard: Amazon.co.uk: McKee, David: Books

  1. What did Dad do when Bernard spoke to him?
  2. Where was Mum when Bernard spoke to her?
  3. What do you think Bernard wanted to speak to them about?

Writing

It is Wednesday, which means it is ‘Handwriting’ day! This week we are going to focus on the letters: i, o, n, w. This needs to be done slowly on lined paper or in your home learning book. No rushing- we can tell if you do! Take your time... You need to write a line of each letter as well as a line of these words: now, won, coin, noun. Remember not to rush and not to leave too much space in between each letter or word (just a finger space).

Use these links to help you with the formation of these letters:

Start your day with a 5 Minute Move!

Reading

Miss Walker's and Miss Howes' Groups: Log in to Oxford Owl and find the story ‘Green Island’. Have a look at the front cover and make a prediction about what you think the story will be about.

Open the book and read up to page 13. Today, we would like you to focus on putting lots of expression into your voice as you read. This means you need to look out for the punctuation will tells to change your voice in that sentence.

. – pause

, - take a quick breath

? – ask a question

! – exclaim!

Miss Rowland's Group: Today I would like you to log on to ‘Oxford Owl’ and find the book â€˜Animal Magic’.

Turn to the inside cover of the book and read the ‘Challenge Words’. After doing this, your job is to write a full sentence in your home learning book, each with a ‘challenge’ word in it. This will show me that you understand what the ‘challenge words’ mean. Then I would like you to read the book, taking it in turns to read a page each with someone in your house. Finally, complete ‘Play Activity 1’ and ‘Play Activity 2’ in the tabs above the book.

Miss Potter's and Miss Upton's Groups: Click on the link to go to Phonics Play. Choose a sound you would like to practise. Look below to see which Phase you need to focus on.

Miss Potter: Phase 4/5

Miss Upton: Phase 5

Writing

Today we are continuing our writing work around the story ‘The Seaside Switch’ by Kathleen Kudlinski.

Yesterday you wrote, drew pictures and labelled all the creatures mentioned in the sea that were seen when the tide came in. This week, our writing task is going to be to write a non-chronological report about a sea creature of your choice!

Today, you need to choose which sea creature you will be wanting to focus on. You can choose one from the story or think of a different sea creature you like.

Research your chosen creature as much as you can - use the Kiddle search engine to help you! Think about these sections: Appearance (what it looks like), Diet (what it eats) and Habitat (where it lives).

We'd love to see your research so remember to send the work you are super proud of to Y2@mostonlane.manchester.sch.uk!

Maths

Miss Rowland's and Miss Higgins' Groups: Get your brain in gear by practising your 2x, 5x and 10x tables.

Today we are going to carry on looking at the village of Mugurameno. Can you remember which country it is in? Can you remember which continent it is in?

Last week we looked at Mugurameno on a map and watched a video. Then we compared their village school to our school.

Today we are going to look at the houses in Mugurameno village and how they are similar and different to our houses! Follow the link and go through the slides with a grown up in your house. Talk about what you can see in each of the pictures you look at. Then complete the 3 activities.

Reading

Miss Walker's and Miss Howes' Groups: Today's story is 'Spike: The Hedgehog Who Lost His Prickles'.

Have a look at the front cover and write a sentence in your home learning book about what you think this story is going to be about.

I think 'Spike: The Hedgehog Who Lost His Prickles' is going to be about _______________.

Now follow the link and listen to or read the 2 extracts. As you listen, think about these things:

  • Did you expect the balloons to carry Spike into the air?

  • How do you think Spike felt?

  • What do you think he saw when he travelled twice around the world?

  • What did you think of the ending?

Then complete Activity 1 and Activity 2 in your home learning book!

Miss Rowland's Group: Today for your inference work, there is a picture named ‘Magic Carpet’. Before looking at the picture, have a guess what you think the picture is going to look like. Describe your guess to someone in your house.

Now open the link and then have a look at the inference picture. Does it look like what you thought it would? Focus closely upon the picture, look at all the little details in the picture. Today I would like you to have a go at answering the 7 questions out loud to an adult in your house. Remember to give full sentence answers and make sure you give reasons for your answers from the picture!

Miss Potter's and Miss Upton's Groups: To start the week, today we would like you to grab a book, get comfy and enjoy the story. Email us the name of your book and why you chose it.

Writing

This week in Writing, we are going to use the book ‘The Seaside Switch’ by Kathleen Kudlinski.

Follow the link and listen to the story. While you are listening, write down all the sea creatures that are described in the story. How many did you get?!

Today we would like you to draw all the creatures you have written down, labelling them with 3 descriptive phrases each. For example, if I drew a sea crab, my three labels could be:

  1. Sharp, pointy claws to grab food with.
  2. Bright, orange shell to keep me safe.
  3. Tiny, black eyes to see what is around me.

Draw at least 5 sea creatures with their labels attached. Colour them in too if you have time!
