‘Be The Best You Can Be’

MFL

Bonjour! My name is Mrs Livesey and I am the specialist French teacher at Moston Lane.

Curriculum

Languages became a compulsory subject at Key Stage 2 in September 2014. As a result, children in Years 3, 4 and 5 now receive a weekly French lesson of approximately 30-40 minutes. Children in Year 6 are offered an after-school French club during the spring term.

Please follow the links to find out more about the expectations for your child:

Lessons

During French lessons, children have the opportunity to sing songs, play games and act out role-plays to practise their speaking and listening skills. Lessons are largely practical and written work is mostly completed in pairs or teams on whiteboards, and very occasionally on worksheets. Where possible, ICT is used to enable the children to learn and reinforce new vocabulary interactively, both through games on the computer and the use of French apps on our school iPads.

Children begin their learning in Year 3 with simple greetings, numbers and colours. They build their confidence by doing lots of repetition and reading or copying basic words and phrases. In Year 4, they continue to learn a series of questions and answers in different topic areas and start to have longer conversations. They also begin read and write short sentences with support, starting to learn how to express their opinions, likes and dislikes. By Year 5 the children are able to ask and answer a wider range of questions, and begin to write longer paragraphs with a basic understanding of some of the key grammatical aspects of French, such as gender, word order and adjectival agreement.

Other Opportunities

Intercultural understanding is an integral part to language learning and we are always striving to provide children with opportunities to appreciate and celebrate cultural differences. We are regularly in touch with a French school with whom we do a number of pen pal exchanges throughout the year, and we are constantly expanding the range of enrichment activities we offer such as French drama workshops, lessons taught by pupils from local high schools and ‘Yoga in French’ sessions. In addition, every year we plan French themed activities during a special ‘Culture Week’ when pupils taste French food and create artwork based on the work of French artists.

Please enjoy exploring some of the pictures which show just a small amount of the fantastic work the children do, and if you have any questions about the MFL curriculum please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.

Au revoir!
